Antique clock glass repair beveled glass in bezel
Thursday, March 26th, 2020 Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Antique clock glass repair beveled glass in bezelThe antique clock sat on the mantel since the beginning of time . One of the kids went to wind the clock and broke the glass . I save old glass for clocks like this. New glass is a different color green and is very flat. The antique glass has a yellow hue and a distorted finish. Sometimes the antique glass has bubbles and blisters . This is important when it comes to the value of the clock. An antique clock with new glass doesn’t retain its resale price.
I have antique beveling machines that run on leather belts. The same type used to make this antique beveled glass lens originally. The fitting of the antique replacement beveled glass in the bezel is very tricky. The tolerances are with in thousands of an inch. I make replacement beveled clock glass for clock shops all over the the country most of them in New York and LA.
Antique Carriage Clock Beveled Glass Replacement
Thursday, March 26th, 2020 Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Antique Carriage Clock Beveled Glass ReplacementI have made “new “old glass for hundreds of carriage clocks. The bevels are small and come to a very sharp point on the edges . They need to be thin on the edge because the grove in the brass were the glass fits is very small. I use old glass when I make replacement panels for antique clocks. You can tell the old glass by the wavy surface and seeds (small bubbles in the glass). This glass is 100 years plus in age . I have a stock of old ( antique ) glass I use for clocks. It helps preserve the value of the clock.
This glass is very old and perfect for making replacement beveled glass panels for antique carriage clocks and regulators.

The blank was cut to size , beveled and the dimple was ground and polished. The dimple is use to add additional clearance for the center stem.
I hope to update the post with a picture of the restored clock. I have made many lens for old clocks but this is the first one with a additional polished bent and dimple.

Custom Bent Glass for antique crown glass door bubble out
Thursday, March 26th, 2020 Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Custom Bent Glass for antique crown glass door bubble outAntique china cabinets in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s use to have very intricate designed wood mullions in the doors. They would install glass that bubbled out between the wood. This is called crown glass or bubble glass. Pennsylvania House Furniture also used this technique in there breakfronts. We made replacement glass for Pennsylvania House Furniture for many years . We custom make replacement glass for any antique cabinet doors. The curve in the glass is not simple radius .
I make a custom mold for each piece no two bent crown glass doors are the same (selling custom molds also to companies such as https://www.bentragerhomes.com.au/).
In the very old pieces of furniture the glass was putty in place . They did not use wood stops to hold in the glass. They would use Portland cement in the putty . This makes the putty very hard and you have to grind it off to install the replacement curved glass.
The real work come matching the antique glazing that holds the glass in the wood door. First you tint the putty and install the glass. Then I use pitch to darken it more and give it the aged dirty look.
